artist brief:

Two and Four (1996/97) is the result of two participants throwing a camera between one another.  The camera recorded its own movement.  The footage was then edited, looped and played on two separate video decks producing audio/ video rhythms which phase perpetually.  On opposite walls sharing a common corner, the footage of camera tossing becomes a vertiginous four way game of catch.

Inspired by slapstick*, I attempt to explore the gap between bodily movements and intention.  Rather than address slapstick as a subject, I set out to make slapstick.  When making this work, I was intent on using a method of shooting video that is not a direct extension of the camera operators gaze, and thus less prone to begin conveying ideas using empathy.  This methodology came about by looking closely at the movements of, as well as the space between, my colleagues, while having a momentary disinterest in pointing a camera at an object or individual.  The space between my colleagues is then re-emphasized in the installation as a Steve Riech like presentation of recorded material. Two and Four uses relations of force to determine a view, and circumnavigate the recording of a subject.  It engages its audience in motion rather than in watching.

*slapstick refers to slapstick comedy in film, i.e.  the work of people like The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, Jerry Lewis, Peter Sellers, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Jaques Tati … among others. Slapstick as I see it, is the production of physical movement that occurs independently from a reactive decision making process, and which none the less results in a series of effects influencing a given circumstance.
