artist brief:

Since Passing, single channel video (2004) …uses footage of a rather youngish Glenn Gould playing piano (Beethoven’s variations in F major, Opus 34).  I turned every bit of footage that lasts the duration of a note into monochrome frames, Red, Green Blue then to variations including Purple and Orange.  After the initial passage, the color frames are reorganized as all variations of red, then all variations of green then all variations of blue, then purple and orange.  From there this logic produces further variation until a kind of summary is reached before starting over.  Given the visual determinations for the editing, the music goes back and forth between melodic and a-tonal.  This video was inspired by an essay Frances Stark wrote about my work in 1997 called “Childish Mathematics”.  That essay starts with a Glenn Gould quote describing Shoenberg’s techniques with the term “Childish Mathematics”.   This video embraces childish mathematics as a method to manipulate found video footage.
