artist brief:

Looked Over, consists of a projected single channel video portrait, about 8 – 10 ft. high. “Looked Over” is an image of the subject of a portrait in the act looking at the said portrait. The portrait image comes from a fixed camera pointed at Monika, recording footage of her face as she scrutinizes it (as it appears on the DV camera’s LCD viewfinder).  While the participant’s eyes move over the details of her face, and as she moves to determine the way in which the camera is framing her head, subtle variation in the portrait image occurs.   The resulting image is essentially a slightly moving still image – a face featuring only the movement created by the act of looking. The 10 minutes of footage replays from beginning to end in a continuous loop.  “Looked Over” refers to the scrutinizing of a surface, and “over” as repetition (the act of looking something over as it is being looked over).
