artist brief:

An Evening in the Distribution of Surplus Energy was a live installation performance designed for the show of the same name arranged by Kevin Hanley, Anja Medved, Kieth Pirlot and Jan Tumlir for Food House gallery Los Angeles. The work, a collaboration between Kevin Hanley and Kieth Pirlot, involved the hiring of two wrestlers who, with microphone devices inserted into their anuses, freestyle wrestled until one of them admitted defeat. The said microphone devices were connected to digital sound effect devices and amplified. The effected audio residual from the wrestlers movements became a presence of sound with various complexities of pitch, tone, phasing, and modulation (audio effects operated by a third party performer). A later manifestation of this work took place for ACME gallery at the Art L.A. Art Fair held at the L.A. Convention Center in 1993. Participants included Carter Potter and Kevin Hanley as the wrestlers and Jimmy Johnson as audio controller (please contact if you have documentation of this event).
